All the fun of the fair at Dreamland, Margate

When I was a kid one of the most exciting things to happen was the fair coming to town. The rides would always have Rock ‘n’ Roll playing, and Teddy Boys with slicked back hair and creepers would tend them.

Today, you might be lucky and a vintage fairground may come to your town, or you can bring on your own luck and visit Margate’s wonderful Dreamland. With the site being used for entertainment since 1874, it seemed the perfect place for a 1950s Fun Park.

Last weekend we popped along to see what it was like and we weren’t disappointed – the rides were super fun and totally 50s, with the UK’s oldest rollercoaster fully restored and ready to roll.
On a beautiful sunny day, wearing our trademark polkadot dresses and with petticoats a-flying we enjoyed test-driving a few rides – the helter-skelter was a struggle but the carousel proved fun – even with so much skirt to contend with!

Once we were dizzy from spinning, we went inside to drink sodas in the diner and play the vintage arcade games.

There was just enough time for a turn around the roller rink in some cute polkadots shorts before a visit to the beach for a bag of good old seaside chips.
